Grottaia Rosso

The brilliant ruby red heralds a forthright, pleasing wine. A nose of intense red berries with cherry leading the way, accompanied by a sweet vanilla note. The full flavour offers up the fleshy sweetness of the cherry supported by well-balanced tannins and acidity, in a good early-drinker.

50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2016 growing season was characterized by a very warm winter with heavy rainfall in later February, which led to earlier budbreak than usual.
Spring brought average temperatures and rain, followed by regular vegetative development.
Summer was hot, but without excessive temperature surges, while excellent day-night temperature ranges ensured the vines retained a good level of acidity.
There was no rain during harvest, which was as usual.

The harvest began in the early days of September for Merlot and ended at the end of September for our late-ripening variety, Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were picked by hand and placed in 12kg crates, with separate harvest for variety and plot. Careful selection of grapes preceded destemming (removing berries from stalks), followed by maceration in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature. Alcoholic fermentation began at this point and lasted for about two weeks, followed by racking and malolactic fermentation. After 6 months maturation in barrique the wine was bottled.
